London Mural – A Canada/Argentina Collaboration

//London Mural – A Canada/Argentina Collaboration

2007

This 2-block long mural was a collaborative project supported through the Downtown Business Association for the City of London, Ontario. It brought together a group of six artists from Argentina alongside La Raza. Coordinated by Sylvia Curtis-Norcross, the large project was completed in the summer of 2007. The mural was designed to enliven and beautify King Street, in downtown London, Ontario.

Imagery in the frieze-like design includes iconic Canadian birds and animals interwoven with Argentinean elements: a bandoneon (concertina) player, a mother and child and a family grouping. A prevailing yellow/ochre/umber color scheme unites the work. The diverse styles of mural contributors added complexity to the project, and the challenge of uniting the diverse figurative and abstract elements into a rhythmic and interconnected composition.

Working with acrylic latex on concrete, the 5000 square foot mural was completed by Argentinean artists Geraldo Ciencielo, Maria Sansotta, Ornella Yori, Juan Bauk, Sylvia Albuixech, Marcelo Caprani, Daniel Zimmerman and La Raza artists Richard Tetrault, Alberto Cerritos, Esther Rausenberg, Brian Saby and Gerald Pedros.
